Stop You Coming and Come

procrastination

I love Reggae music. I am an avid fan of the classics; the legends like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Black Ururu and of course Steel Pulse just to name a few.

Before I get into my story, let me introduce myself for those who may not know me. I am Christina Moss – Robinson, aka The Pit Bull of Accounting and the proud owner of MossFinancials. I help virtual service based businesses manage their financials and protect their profit margins. I have a love for virtual law firms and business coaches, but I don’t discriminate. I’ve worked in many industries.

Now that we have intros out of the way, lets get back to my story.

The other day I was listening to Sirius XM radio in my car. Channel 42 The Joint to be specific. An unfamiliar song came on from Steel Pulse. The title? “Stop You Coming and Come”. I enjoyed the song but I couldn’t help but to think that some how the chorus “Stop you coming and come” was speaking directly to me. The title basically means to “if you are going to do something, hurry up and do it” Sounds a little like procrastination, doesn’t it? Its like saying that you are going to do something; over and over again but you never do. I had been procrastinating on something that I know full well I was supposed to do a while ago. This song was talking about me!

So, why am I exposing my weakness of procrastination to you? Well, because I am passionate about helping businesses grown and procrastination is a business killer. You don’t believe me? Let’s look at some examples together.

And I figure that if I am dealing with it, then its safe to assume that others are too. I figure that perhaps we can help each other kill the spirit of procrastination.

Let’s take a look at Jamie. Jamie had a great 1st quarter. Leads are coming in and they are converting to clients and revenue. But as they leads dry up by the beginning of quarter 2, Jamie realizes that its time to step her game up. Now, back in 1st quarter Jamie knew that this scenario would like occur and so she planned in advanced. She created a kick-ass lead generation sales funnel that is sure to bring in the big bucks. It will take some work on her part but she is confident it will work. One week goes by, now two. She has the tools to implement this plan right now but procrastination has crippled her.

Now here it is, the first month of the second quarter gone, and her pipeline has dried up like a lemon sitting in the sun. She has potentially forfeited thousands of dollars in revenue because of her procrastination. Its time to tell Jamie “Stop You Coming and Come!”

Let’s look at procrastination another way. Micah has had a very successful year as a baker. After much deliberation and after an offer too good to be true was presented to him, he decides to spread his wings and buy his own kitchen. His revenue can sustain it. He has saved up for this very event. Now Micah has been handling his financials by himself. A few months have gone by and he hasn’t recorded anything. Actually they have become a mess. His focus has shifted to growing his bakery business. He has wanted to hire an accountant to help take the load off, but he “hasn’t gotten around to it.”.

Micah knows a little something about accounting but not enough to feel confident that things are accurate and correct. Now the bank is asking him for 3 years worth of financials statements in order to approve this business loan. What? 3 years worth??! Yeah, so he has been recording daily transactions…sort of… but he hasn’t relied on a professional to review transactions, reconcile accounts and generate financial statements. He knew that the needed these services, he knew that he couldn’t afford not to have someone on his team to help. What happened? Micah remembers saying to himself, “I really need to get someone in here before its too late…” Procrastination is such a kill joy. “Stop you coming and come, Micah!”

So as you can see from Jamie and Micah’s experience how procrastination can hinder a business. When I speak to individuals and they ask me what I do, I get the following questions and comments:

“I don’t make enough to hire an accountant”

“When should I start looking for an accountant?”

“I’ve thought about talking to someone, but I really don’t have the time”

“Oh, that reminds me, I need to look into accounting services…”

I answer these questions and comments in one answer, “Not true, right now and stop you coming and come!”
